Luggage Review: The Best Bags For YOUR Travel Style

My Best Luggage & Bag Recommendations For Travel Your Way

As The Caffeinated DAY Tripper, my go-to bag is usually a trendy tote (I can have a bit of a fashion problem), my trusty orange Under Armour backpack (it has served me, dutifully, and would SO be getting a rave review…if the model were still in production) or my very own back pocket. This weekend, I’m headed off on a lengthier exciting travel adventure (no worries, I’ll be day tripping there too) and it got me thinking:

What Are The Best Luggage Options For Travel Our Style?

We all travel differently, so I’m going to cover a wide range of choices. Whether you are a frequent world or business traveler, a weekend jet-setter, have kids, pets or just want to “climb that goddamn mountain” I’ve got a great bag suggestion for you.

I am SO excited about this first one. It is on my wishlist, when I (very soon) part ways with trusty orange backpack. Shhh, our secret!

SolarGoPack Solar Powered Backpack
The SolarGoPack, solar-powered backpack is a tough, yet stylish, backpack, equipped with a solar panel you can use to charge your mobile devices. *hears choirs of angels* As a gadget and travel addict, this is my fantasy come to fruition. I first saw one of these on Ethan Zohn’s show, Earth Tripping, and became obsessed. A 12000 mAh Lithium ion battery (included) charges a removable, lightweight 5 W solar panel. It even has device adapters. We’re talking cell phone, iPod, iPad or tablet here people! But, wait, the sun isn’t shining? No worries. This baby even works on indoor light. The dimensions are 14 x 6.2 x 17 inches ; 2.8 pounds. This pack is perfect for hiking, biking, camping, travel, festivals…even (sorry kids) school. You will never run out of power with this beauty on your back and it comes with a 3 year warranty. Reviewers found it kept their electronics powered up extremely well. This is a light duty backpack (no pun intended), meaning you won’t be fitting a week’s worth of travel gear in here, but it’s great for day or weekend use.

Travelon Luggage, Wheeled Underseat Carry-On With Back-Up Bag In Quilted Microfiber
The Travelon Luggage, Wheeled Underseat Carry-On With Back-Up Bag comes in chocolate (pictured) or eggplant (click photo to view) quilted microfiber material. It offers a large main compartment, front organizer compartment, zippered front pocket and mesh expansion pocket. The full-size back-up bag folds for compact storage. It’s dimensions are 8.5 x 14 x 12 inches and it weighs in at 5.6 pounds. Reviewers found it rolled easily, fit perfectly under any airline seat as well, of course, as in the overhead compartment. They also liked that it was lightweight and had many compartments for storage. They didn’t really have much to complain about!

The Kipling Sherpa
The Kipling Sherpa comes in purple (as pictured) black, espresso (a particular favorite of any true Caffeinated Day Tripper), glacier blue, true blue and pink. You can click the photo to see these gorgeous color options. The Kipling is 100% nylon with a nylon lining, zipper closure and removable shoulder strap. It has many pockets and compartments. It’s 11.5 inches high, 18 inches wide and has a shoulder drop of 25 inches when the strap is used. It weighs in at 1.1 pounds. Reviewers found it to be an ideal overnight bag, great for carry on and could even double as a diaper bag or toddler tote for the mini-traveler in your life. Best of all? It comes with its own monkey (gorilla?). Hey, who doesn’t love monkeys (gorillas)?

Travel Buddies, Popo Parrot
How cute is Travel Buddies’ Popo Parrot set? For the wee travelers in your life, it also comes in fun robot, alien, ladybug and penguin styles. You can click the photo to see these adorable other options. The Travel Buddies set consists of an 18″ wheelie suitcase, with a retractable handle that can be adjusted to the perfect height for either adult or child, or hand-carry handle. There is also a matching 13″ hard-shell ABS back pack, which is lightweight and sturdy. It has a hand-carry handle and child-sized back straps. This is not a set for long-term travel. Mom & Dad will have to pack a bigger separate suitcase for long journeys. This is, however, the perfect size for a weekend away, a stay at Grandma’s, sleepover with friends, works great as carry-on or for those favorite toys (to keep the youngsters occupied). And kids love carrying it. Bonus for the parents!

Floto Luggage Milano Duffle Bag
This Floto Luggage Milano Duffle Bag is gorgeous! Made in Tuscany, Italy…yes, it is a bit pricey…but you get what you pay for in polished 100% italian calf-skin leather lined with 100% cotton denim lining. It has a zippered inside pocket, double-stitched seams and reinforced handles. Brass or stainless steel hardware compliments your choice of five colors – vecchio brown, olive brown, black, tuscan red, and orange. This is travel luxury and convenience at its finest. This duffel is 11″ high x 10″ wide x 20″ long and fits easily in an overhead storage compartment. It comes with a lifetime guarantee. Reviewers loved the quality of the leather and stitching. This bag came highly recommended and only gets sexier with aging. (You know, like us Caffeinated Day Trippers? ;P)

Speaking of sexy, these are my dogs: Dougal & Iowa

dogs

Dougal the Labradoodle and Iowa the Australian Shepherd

They enjoy a nice ride in the car as much as the next canine but are a little too large for an airline approved pet carrier. In fact, Dougal has put on about 500 lbs. (only a slight exaggeration *wink* ) since this photo. So I won’t be toting these guys around, Paris-Hilton-style, anytime soon. However, if you have a petite pup or fancy feline that you just can’t bear to leave at the kennel, we have just the carrier for you!

The Bergan, Soft-Sided, Comfort Pet Carrier
The airline compliant* Bergan Comfort Carrier comes in a variety of colors (black, rose wine, raspberry, mineral blue and spinach green; click photo for color options) and two sizes, for the traveling pampered pet weighing up to 22 pounds. It has a removable fleece bed for easy washing. There is a half zip opening on one end, a full zip opening on the other and extra mesh panels allow easy accessibility, interaction, anxiety control and air flow for your pet. There are three exterior pockets. Carrying straps fasten together into the attached padded handle. The included removable shoulder strap is adjustable and padded for your comfort. A bonus identification tag,  reflective strips, safety belt loops and locking zippers help ensure your pet’s safety. The maximum external carrier dimensions are: Length 19 inches, Width 10 inches, Height 13 inches. approximate internal living space dimensions are: Length 16 inches, Width 8 inches, Height 10 inches. This carrier is perfect for quick trips to the v-e-t (we have to spell that word out around here), road trips, flights…what have you…and it’s easy to fold flat & store, as it is soft sided. Reviewers found it durable, easy to keep clean and very convenient for travel or every day use.

*always double-check with your airline

The Travelers Choice Tasmania 3 Piece Luggage Set
In dark brown, purple or red metallic diamond-grid textured finish (click photo to see color options) The Travelers Choice Tasmania 3 Piece Luggage Set consists of:

  • A large bag, measuring 29 inches x 20 inches x 11.5 inches
  • A medium bag,  measuring 25 inches x 17 inches x 10 inches
  • The smallest bag, measuring in at just 21.5 inches height. x 15 inches weight. x 9 inches depth

The hard-shell exteriors are 100% Polycarbonate, making them extremely impact resistant; durable enough for airports, planes, trains or automobiles. They have a clam-shell style opening and fully lined interior with expansions offering 25 percent more packing capacity per bag. Their main compartment zipper has a TSA security lock and dual wheel spinners make getting where you’re going a breeze. This set works great for business travelers or enthusiasts, alike. Reviewers found it to be lightweight, easy to roll, durable (slight scratches occurred in rough baggage handling, like any other luggage set), quick to spot on the luggage carousel and a good overall value.

Nautica Luggage: Helmsman Four Piece Set

The Nautica Helmsman Four Piece Luggage Set comes in gray with orange detailing or navy with yellow (click photo to view other color option). It is 100% polyester with telescoping handles and a lightweight frame for transport. Multiple compartments make interior organization a snap and the suitcases are expandable. It consists of a 28″ Pullman, a 25″ Pullman, a 21″ Pullman, and a 17″ Tote. Reviewers found this set durable, stylish and were often repeat purchasers of Nautica products. As someone who has owned their products, I also trust the Nautica brand.

So, there you have it; my picks for luggage and bags to accommodate all types of travel.

I hope I’ve assisted you in finding the best bag for your travel lifestyle.

This is a great review on luggage. Definitely very informative. I try to stay course to my normal travel habits and use my backapck, but I do use a smaller carryon bag for shorter trips.

The Popo parrot is so cute haha although the one I’d choose here would be the Nautica. Unless well, I choose to let the inner child within pick the Popo parrot…

I will take one Floto Luggage Milano Duffle Bag and a SolarGoPack Solar Powered Backpack please!!!

What a great selection of luggage! I have to say I love the look of the Italy duffle bag but I know deep down the backpack is far more my style and the fact that I could charge something on the go if needed is a real plus. I have lost count of the times when we have been camping and really needed to use a phone or wanted to update something but our batteries have died!

Nice Blog post – love the selection! :)

Thanks, Tam. Love hearing your opinion on this as a well-traveled blogger. I’m 100% with you on your choices. :)

I love the Floto Luggage Milano Duffle Bag but not sure it would be best for my travel style and expeditions, so would have to use the SolarGoPack Solar Powered Backpack for day trips.

    • Reply Erin

You literally just read my mind, Brad. I long to book exotic travel locations worthy of the duffle (just so I can own that chic baby ;P ) but know that the solar backpack is much more appropriate to my actual lifestyle. You know…the one where I’m schlepping up a mountain in mud-caked hiking boots or trying to keep my well-worn Chuck Taylors out of suspicious puddles in the subway? ;P Thanks for lending your input. Appreciate it so!

I guess the Nautica set would be my type of luggage. I’m still hanging on to a favourite piece of Hush Puppy luggage that has been a real star for many years. Will be sad when it gives up the ghost!!

    • Reply Erin

I know what you mean. We all have our favorite pieces that we just can’t live without and get sad when we wear them out. I also hate that they always discontinue my favorites for new products. New is great but sometimes “trusty old” is all we want.

Great choices you’ve put together! I would go for the Italian brown leather bag, but I’m not sure I would like the price tag. :) The solar charge backpack is a great idea, I wonder if it really works. Ow, and the Kipling bag has a nice color. I guess I like them all! :)

    • Reply Erin

That’s why I picked the ones I did. They are all great bags in their own way. I drool over that Italian leather one nearly every day and am still saving my pennies for that solar backpack.

  7. Reply Samantha

Nice reviews! We’re in the process of looking for new luggage for our Asia trip, there’s just so many dang options! But I LOVE the idea of a solar charge backpack… if it really works!

Thanks! From what I hear, they work great. Here’s hoping cuz I am SO picking one of those babies up!

What a wonderful review, I really like how you have put everything together, A little something for everyone. We usually use a backpack and a carry-on and primarily dedicated to Samsonite roller bags.
